Biobent Polymers was created to commercialize a revolutionary bio-composite polymer developed by Battelle. In its quest for sustainable and eco-friendly materials for use in its UniKeep™ and EnvyPak™ product lines, Univenture joined with Battelle and the Ohio Soybean Council in a program to develop advanced plastics that replaced the petroleum content with renewable, agricultural co-products. This project team went on to win a coveted R&D 100 Award, and their discovery is at the heart of Biobent Polymers.
The urgency for offsetting petroleum consumption is clear. Fast growing demand and a finite supply are reaching a tipping point. Society must shift to more efficient use of our non-renewable resources. This realization has, among other things, given a boost to bioplastics, which represent only a small fraction the overall plastics market but are growing at an accelerated pace. Unfortunately, to date replacing petroleum plastics with bioplastics has required sacrifices in performance and higher costs.
The new family of bio-composites is the first bioplastic without compromises. These revolutionary bioplastics replace up to 40% of petroleum content with an abundant agricultural co-product, and unlike other bio-composites maintain the properties of the base plastic. Furthermore, the use of unrefined soy meal (and other co-products) enables Biobent to offer bio-composite resins at prices comparable with pure petroleum plastics.
